Engraved
The photographs in the earlier category ‘Absence’ presented one approach to the challenge of making a photograph about something that was not in front of the camera’s lens. Following on from this was the question of how could one write about this predicament.
The category ‘Engraved’ comprises a sequence of photographs of independent pieces of text. They are straightforwardly representational and a camera was used to make them. Do they have a place within the discipline of photography? Is it possible to write something about them that reveals meaning or will they remain unworded, without anecdote, silent without explanation, and ultimately, without any supplementary comment whatsoever?
